I Had A Red Patch On My Right Leg Which

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Oct 2018
Question: I had a red patch on my right leg which I noticed on Sat. evening. On Sunday evening, I noticed another red patch which started with a less dark color and then turned darker like the one the day before. Post a doctor visit, searching for similar images led to the vasculitis page.
1. Is this vasculitis and if so what is the cause and treatment ? Does this need serious medical attention ( as it can impact heart blood vessels or internal organs) ?
2. What medical tests can detect it ?
Other symptoms:
Bad cough for a week, chest congestion
General feeling of being "underpowered" ( reduced strength and energy). Particularly felt Wednesday , Thursday last week. That feeling improved over the weekend.

Brief Answer:
Looks like capillaritis( subtype of vasculitis), topical steroid & antihistaminic

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to ask a doctor service
I have gone through your complaints and reviewed the attached photograph.
It seems to be capillaritis which is inflammation of the tiny blood vessels.
It is a subtype of vasculitis but doesn’t look worrisome.
It could be due to insect bite, infection, drugs and sometimes occurs without any cause.
Since it is present on one leg only and looks localised it seems to be due to insect bite hypersensitivity reaction.
I would recommend you to apply topical steroid like clobetasol propionate cream on the affected areas twice daily.
If associated with irritation take antihistaminic like tablet levocetrizine 5 mg once daily at bedtime for few days.
This should resolve the rashes.
It doesn't seem to be any serious medical condition and no blood investigations are required.
Just keep it under observation.
Your other symptoms could be due to viral infection.
I hope to have answered your query and would be happy to answer any further queries.
Regards
Dr Asmeet
