Question: Hi, I had a tympanomadtoidectomy on right ear 4 weeks ago. I’ve had pre and post op nausea, sweating, and chills (no fever). Also have had fullness and some mild sensory problems with left UE. My doctor doesn’t seem concerned but the symptoms are annoying.

Brief Answer:
You may be having middle ear and mastoid cavity infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You may be having middle ear and mastoid cavity infection for which you had tympanomastoidectomy. In the postoperative period there can be ear fullness as the cavity is generally packed with gel foam and the cavity epithelium will discharge for next 2-3months. Nausea, giddiness is common due to stimulation of the middle ear cavity, vestibular structures, semicircular canals. Sweating and chill is not common. It can be due to infection of the middle ear cavity. So take a ear swab and sent for culture and sensitivity. Start tab augmentin 1 gm twice daily for 1 week. If there is any swelling, redness behind the ear then consult your surgeon immediately. If there is persisting fever with chill then do a complete blood count, dengue test and covid test. If blood count is high then consult a physician for further management. Keep ear dry.
