Question: I had an abdominal ultrasound according to the report.....which shows "left kidney lobulated contour of lower pole...a mass at this site is not excluded"so now i have to get ct with and without XXXXXXX can you please enlighten me as to what this lobulated contour could be. My labs were normal with the bun/creatine ratio being just one point low. '11' the range of normal on my sheet is 12 to 28. I have never had a kidney infection or kidneys stones at least that I know of. seeing the sentence about the 'mas' scared me as well. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Based on the facts that you have posted you have been detected to have a lobulated contour of the lower pole of left kidney suspecting it to be a mass (Tumor) in the kidney.

For practical purposes, it is standard protocol to consider the mass in the kidney to be either benign or malignant tumor unless proved otherwise by doing further studies like plain and contrast CT Scan of Urinary system.

Though you have no active symptoms related to urinary system or pain in the abdomen it is always advisable to get these tests done to rule out the same, so that appropriate treatment modality can be planned out at an initial stage of the disease.

Normal appearance of the on ultrasound scanning looks like a sharply demarcated cortex and hypo echoic medulla which are well differentiated .
Lobulated kidney indicates a mass comprising of bunch of small masses or a mass with more than 2 lobes (Nodules).

It is usually due to benign or malignant tumor and has to be ruled out by further tests like plain CT Scan and Ct Scan with contrast .

The mass in the kidney is always suspected to be either a benign or malignant tumor unless proved otherwise by a study of either a CT Scan or an MRI.
