Question: I had been taking Trazadone 400mg and luvox 300mg for depression. My doctor prescribed prednisone 10mg 2 tablets 2x daily for 5 days and 10mg 2 tablets daily for another 5 days for cough. However, since taking Prednisone, my insomnia had worsen dramatically. I stopped taking prednisone after 10 days but my insomnia had not improved but just worsen. Are the insomnia side effects from taking prednisone permanent? Thanks very much in advance for your help. are there any adverse drug interaction between prednisone and trazadone?

Brief Answer:
Insomnia is a temporary side effect of prednisone

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. As you have experienced, insomnia is a side effect of prednisone, due to the effect it has on cortisol levels that are related to our sleep cycle. This is a temporary side effect, though it may take a few weeks for your sleep hormones to find their regular rhythm again. There are no serious drug interactions between your medications, though the Luvox can alter the metabolism of prednisone, which may have increased its effects somewhat.

I would just encourage you that these symptoms should be temporary and will improve over time. In the meantime, you could try using melatonin, which is another hormone associated with sleep and setting your sleep cycles. Using it before you try to go to sleep may help you get back into rhythm more quickly.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
