Question: I had sepsis 12 years ago that caused abcesses on my liver and damage to a portion of the liver. I have avoided over the counter pain killers for the most part since. Recently, I have have a flare up of muscle and joint pain. This has gone on for about a month. Last night it was keeping me awake, so I took an ibuprophen that was very effective. I will consult with my internist in March, but in the meantime, what would be the safest and most effectiver pain killer?

Brief Answer:
Better use ibuprofen

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I think you can continue using ibuprofen.
It is more effective and causing less damage to liver then acetaminophen or other pain killers.
If you. can tolerate the pain without using a painkiller you can do it.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
