Question: I had strep throat in January 2018 that was treated with Penicillin. It was followed immediately by hives, which I continue to have seven months later in early August. Initially the hives were mainly round and in bunches and bit deep into the muscle or joint if they were on the arm, for example, or respectively, the thumbs. They lasted for weeks. I took Benadryl to deal with the itching. After a 3 week reprieve in XXXXXXX I got a big welt on my forearm followed by more round hives that started moving more rapidly from one spot to another, appearing and disappearing. They do not seem as deep. I also got hives right next to my eye three times, dark purple ones that were disturbing to look at. I continue to take Benadryl. My allergist tested me for an allergy to Penicillin in March and I did not have one. My internist says the hives just have to run their course. It is wearing me out and I find it hard to understand why there is not a shot I can be given once a month or something that will make them go away all together. At least for a while so I can do something other than deal with the ongoing symptoms. No tests have been done re: lupus, hypothyroid, mono, rheumatoid arthritis or any other things that rashes or hives can sometimes be an indication of. I see my allergist again this week and want to know what to expect and or ask or demand.

Brief Answer:
A blood allergy profile needs to be done to identify possible allergens

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query carefully and understand your concerns.

It seems that you have developed an allergic reaction to something. I would request you to upload an image of the affected areas. It will help me to evaluate the condition.

Since you've already taken Benadryl and Cetirizine, possibly better ones like Fexofenadine or Loratidine can be tried (prescription based medicines). You could also apply some emollient like calamine lotion or some moisturizer like aloe vera lotion.

However, the trigger needs to be identified. I would insist on getting a blood allergy test done. The identification of the trigger otherwise might not be easy.

I would await your response based on which I will guide you further. Let me know if I could help further.

Regards.

Thank you for your reply. This weekend my right ear has become swollen, red hot to the touch and inflamed. Benadryl helped make it go down a little but there are two round hives on the cheek bone next to the ear. I will try to download these images. This bout started in late XXXXXXX and there's been no let up, although the Benadryl and Zyrtec do suffocate the symptoms the hives keep coming. I had surgery on my throat last year when hardware from a fusion done in 2010 on my cervical spine moved to my esophagus. It was there several years and destroyed the top of the esophagus and the back of the throat wall peeled down. I had to go on TPN for 5 weeks and on 4 different antibiotics for 8 weeks and was in three different hospitals for 2 months, ultimately. It concerns me that the ear has become a great big hive all by itself. I see Dr. XXXXXXX in Manhattan on Monday at 3:00. I will ask about a blood allergy test. Where can I upload those images? I don't see how.

Brief Answer:
A few more tests would be helpful

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I am glad that you would be uploading the images subsequently. I do not understand the reason why you go on antibiotics every 8 weeks. Could you please explain. I will also insist you to get the blood tested for ANA (antinuclear antibody), ASO titre (Anti Streptolysin) levels checked in addition to the blood allergy test.

You can upload the attachments using the facility on the upper right of this page. Alternatively you can email the attachments to YYYY@YYYY with the query id 374319 and my name mentioned in the subject.

I would await your response.

Regards
