I Had Surgery For A Viginal Hernia In Late November.

Question: I had surgery for a viginal hernia in late November. Recovery has been slow as expected. My diarrhea began about 2 weeks ago, most times with anal spotting. In early January, at my post op followup, I learned the spotting was expected, and another 4-6 weeks recovery would allow the swelling to go away. The surgery included a "complete removal of , repair of rectum & vagina ... Anes complete removal of vagina wall (listed 2x on bill)". My diarrhea began as semi-solid brown, then liquid dark brown, then became light green after diet adjustments several days ago, then after another day this week, my liquid poops were light green. Each time, there has been red blood spotting at end of the adventure. The food adjustment I have made is to stop making coffee w/ "Newman's Own Organics (gold package), Newman's Special Blend Medium Roast Ground Coffee" Ingredients: Organic Arabica Coffee. I also tapered off my regular varied whole grain diet, and am drinking seltzer rather than my own artesian well tap water. Suggestions? One of my concerns is i may have picked up a hepatitis from my hospital stay, but it now is nearly 4 months since my surgery and overbite stay.

Brief Answer:
Most probably intestinal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history well and understood the concerns.
The diarrhea as you have mentioned 2 weeks ago and had the surgery in November.
This indicates that the diarrhea is most probably related to the intestinal infection:
The red blood spotting could have been due to anal canal or rectum wall getting inflamed due to infection thus causing spotting at the end of passing motion.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Please get stool tests done. This may show whether there is bacterial infection causing all the symptoms that you have mentioned.
Also a blood tests may help further.
If there is any evidence of an intestinal infection then a course pf prescription based antibiotic, metronidazole and probiotics may help solve your problems. If the infection is tested the spotting may stop on its own if due to infection.
The best water is one that is boiled for 20 minuted and cooled. This kills all the bacteria and viruses in water.
Foods adjustments should be done if advised so by your Doctors or Nurses, otherwise continue the one which suited you the most before surgery.

Getting an actual examination by your Operating Surgeon surely helps to see the exact cause of spotting of blood at the end of passing motion and review the operation site.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please give feedback.
And feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap fo communication.

With Regards.
