I Have 2-3 Glasses Of Wine About Four Times A

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2020
Question: I have 2-3 glasses of wine about four times a week for the last year and a half probably. I quit drinking four days ago. Ultimately I feel pretty food, I had shaky hands yesterday and I’m tired and slightly have a headache today but that’s all. I’ve feared for a while that I was developing/had a dependency on alcohol. I ran out of wine Sunday night and just haven’t gone to get any- I figured it’s as good a time as any to stop drinking for a while and pay more attention to my health. I was reading online and I didn’t realize that detoxing from alcohol can be dangerous and now I’m scared I’m doing more damage than good.

No need to worry

Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concern. The first thing to mention is that you are apparently not a heavy drinker and so you need not necessarily have withdrawal symptoms. Even if you have them, they are more likely to be mild. Your tiredness and headache are possibly the withdrawal symptoms that you are facing. The withdrawal symptoms generally resolve spontaneously within a week, occasionally lasting longer. Unless you have a serious health condition, you probably would not need more than a supportive environment to help you through. That includes:

* A quiet place
* Soft lighting
* Limited contact with people
* A positive, supportive atmosphere
* Healthy food and lots of fluids

It would be preferable to monitor your pulse and blood pressure. If they remain stable, there is no cause for concern. If needed, your local physician can prescribe oral benzodiazepines and they can prevent chances of severe withdrawal symptoms. As of now it would be preferable to take some vitamin B supplement for a week or so.
