I Have A .4 Tear In One Of My Shoulder

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Sep 2019
Question: I have a .4 tear in one of my shoulder tendons. I%E2%80%99ve had this condition for about three months, doing PT and it has strengthened my shoulder generally and I am otherwise pretty functional. However, I have some pain during sleep.

i%E2%80%99m wanting to know:

1 - Might my pain cease if I continued doing conservative therapy, i.e PT?
2 - Whether there is any reason to continue to take anti-inflammatories. I%E2%80%99ve been taking phara strength antiinflammatories for a week now. They don%E2%80%99t impact my night pain at all, although I suppose they might impact infllammation.
3 - Is this condition likey to deteriorate, or will I eventually need surgery?

Brief Answer:
Can heal with conservative treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the attached report. There is a full thickness tear of the distal supraspinatus tendon. This tear can heal with conservative treatment. Your pain will also gradually decrease if you continue with conservative therapy- regular physiotherapy. Usually such tears can take 6 months to heal properly.
The pain is likely to gradually disappear. You have mild inflammatory changes also present in the shoulder joint. Taking anti inflammatory medicines will help in reducing the inflammation and discomfort.
The condition is not likely to deteriorate. In case the tear does not heal and you have a persistent pain then surgery might be needed to repair the torn tendon.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your response, Dr. XXXXXXX

From what I understand, it’s usually not a good idea to take anti-inflammatories indefinitely. As I don’t experience any decrease in my pain by taking them, is there any harm in stopping taking them? Even if I don’t experience any pain relief, are they helping reduce internal inflammation? And, if I am to continue to take them, how long shall I do so?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brief Answer:
You can stop these after 2-3 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It is not advisable to take the anti inflammatories for more than 2-3 weeks. You can stop taking them in case you do not feel any improvement. These do help in decreasing the internal inflammation but a reduction in inflammation will also decrease the pain. You can do a hot compress in the area to improve the blood circulation in the area to help in the healing.
In case the pain increases after stopping the anti inflammatories then you can continue with it after consulting with your orthopedician.
Hope my answer is helpful.
