Question: I have a abdominal anuersym at 3 cm I am so worried that it is causing my blood pressure to rise.. my doctor has me on a diuretic 12.5 should I be on a beta blocker instead?? Do they always get bigger? What are my chances that it stays the same size ?? I am also worried about exercising am I doing more damage? I exercise for an hour everyday on the elliptical and bike..I have exercised for years for my anxiety.. how many years do I have before I must have surgery?? How did I get this? I do not smoke..only 2-3 percent of women get this?? I am so surprised.. unless anxiety causes it..but my anxiety has been pretty controlled with exercise for years..maybe I need counseling.. I am so distressed over this diagnosis!!

Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and report would explain that the growth rate depends on individual properties and lifestyle.

There are many causes that may lead to abdominal aorta aneurysms: arterial hypertension, family history, connective tissue disorders, infections, trauma, obesity, smoking and alcohol abuse, etc..

We can not determine what really caused it in your case and we can not make predictions how fast it will grow.

Anxiety is not directly related to it, but it may trigger high blood pressure.

But we can monitor its growth by periodically following up every 6-12 months with abdominal ultrasound.

From the other side, some tips to slow its progression would be:

- closely monitor your blood pressure values
- periodically check your blood lipid profile and treat dyslipidemia if present
- perform regular physical activity and avoid straining physical activity
- avoid smoking contacts and alcohol
- avoid trauma and weight lifting
- use a balanced diet rich in fibers, vitamins and proteins
- reduce salt and caffeine intake.

Surgery is usually considered with diameter above 5.5cm, but by following the above tips, I think this will not happen.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Yes, it is OK light weight lifting, but I would recommend avoiding heavy weight lifting or running, which can raise your blood pressure values.

Hope to have been helpful!
