Might need to be cut open and drained
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch,
Thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'.
The main issue with a boil like this is whether it is going to drain on its own or not. If it doesn't, then the infection cannot clear, and even antibiotics will not be effective against it, because the boil has formed a pocket of pus that antibiotics cannot get to.
So you may need to see a doctor about cutting the boil open and allowing it to drain.
Sometimes you can encourage it to drain on its own by placing a warm compress, such as a towel soaked in hot water, on it 4 times a day. You could try that for a day or two, but if it is not draining or getting better by then, I would see a doctor. If the doctor determines there is no pocket of pus to cut open, they may just give you antibiotics for a skin infection there.
If you do develop any fever, or the swelling and redness are spreading, I would also go sooner rather than later to have a doctor look at it in person.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions, I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
