Hello!

Welcome back on - Ask a Doctor - service!

Regarding your concern let me explain that a calcium score is a helpful tool of a coronary CT examination to provide us with more information on the presence and extend of coronary artery atherosclerosis.

It is especially helpful when the patient has a suspicious clinical symptomatology and coronary risk factors.

When the calcium score is high a more advanced disease is expected.

Anyway, the presence of calcium in the coronary walls, does not always mean that coronary obstructive lesions should be present.

Several causes may lead to minimal calcium deposits within the arterial walls and this findings should prompt for further clinical investigations to first review if there are calcium deposits in other arterial territories or organs.

If such is the case, clinical and laboratory investigations should be follows for a better study of calcium metabolism pathways within the body (including parathyroid glands function, vitamin D metabolism, renal function, etc.)

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to ave been helpful to you!

In case of any further questions ,feel free to ask me again!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
