I Have A Constant Pain (say About A 3 Out

default
Posted on Sun, 11 Nov 2018
Question: I have a constant pain (say about a 3 out of 10) on my side. It seems to go about from my ribs down to the upper point of my pelvis. Also if I reach around with my hand high up on my waist and push with my thumb it is tender. I hope the pain is outside the ribs not underneath say in the kidney. Two years ago I tore my side muscles (maybe the obliques ?) doing an Eskimo roll in a kayak. This involves pulling down with the arm starting above the head. I can't remember if this is when this pain began. One year ago I had an ultra sound of my abdomen nothing was found (except moderately enlarged prostate). Several months later I had a bone scan which was negative as well.

Brief Answer:
musculoskeletal disorder?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

since the involved site is tender to touch, the most likely cause is a musculoskeletal disorder. Such disorders usually get worse with certain moves. Have you noticed anything like that? Another disorder that may cause tenderness or pain in the half of the body is herpes zoster. Herpes may present with pain and the lesions may occur a few days later.

Pain at this location may harbor various disorders besides the musculoskeletal disorders including intestinal disorders, vascular disorders, renal disorders etc. Some of them are not expected to cause superficial tenderness. A thrombosed vein for example (in the spleen or kidney) may cause pain but external pressure is not supposed to cause 'tenderness'. Intestinal disorders like the irritable bowel syndrome or others may cause tenderness and even pain during palpation.

Clinical examination provides very helpful clues in such cases, so if the symptom is bothering you enough visiting a doctor would be recommended.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

Kind Regards!
