Posted on Thu, 18 Apr 2019
Question: I have a history of high level of calcium in my blood die to elevated vitamin d 1,25. It is believed it is related to my Crohn's Disease. My doctor sent me for a 24 hour Urine collection to make sure my urine calcium wasn't to high and I got the attached results. Creatinine is good, urine calcium is low, and protein is high. This looks like some type of kidney disease issue. Can you advise what these results mean as I am not to familiar on kidney stuff? Are these results worrisome?

Brief Answer:
It doesn't seem like kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi Jupoc911,

The results do not indicate kidney disease. The low urinary calcium must be analyzed in combination with your plasma-level; if this is normal, I would not worry, but if it is elevated, you should see an endocrinologist for further diagnostics. Then it could suggest an effect of concurrent medication for CD or familial hypercalcemia. A high level if Vitamin D is typically not a result of CD.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.

it's not the actual vitamin D but the calcitriol levels which I believe is the d 1'25. my serum.calcium was actually 10.3 so at the upper limit of normal. what about the total.protein level in my urine? was flagged as high.

Brief Answer:
The protein is only marginally elevated

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

The protein level in your urine is only marginally elevated. I recommend you have an ultrasound of your kidneys and a referral for a renography to assess kidney function.

You should also talk to your general practitioner about the possibility of a genetic test for familial hypocalcuric hypercalcemia, where the kidneys absorb too much calcium.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.
