I Have A Lump Above My Hyoid Bone . In

Question: I have a lump above my hyoid bone. In the front and center of my neck, almost as high as under my tongue. It moves when I swallow. Not painful. But I’m also getting food stuck in that area of my throat. I never choke. And only small food like rice and ground beef. I’m booked for a barium swallow (sp?). There is nothing anywhere online I can find that match these symptoms. The two issues may not even be relevant to each other. But a pretty concerning coincidence non the less.

Brief Answer:
Zenker diverticulum

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for using “Ask a doctor service” for your health related questions.

I understand your concern. The symptoms you describe might be due to a condition called Zenker diverticulum or pharyngoesophageal diverticulum. This is pouch inside the throat, in the junction between the larynx and he esophagus, cause by relaxation and weakening of the throat wall. It may cause difficulty swallowing, a sensation of a lump in the neck, food getting stuck, smelly breath, coughing especially during the night, a voice change.
It is diagnosed by a barium swallow, so it is good that you are already scheduled for one.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
