I Have A Mass Found On My Parotid Salivary Gland

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Oct 2019
Question: I have a mass found on my parotid salivary gland. I had an ultrasound and then a fna biopsy. Biopsy came back indicating suspicious for granulomatous lymphadentis. The doctor indicated this is not primary to the salivary gland. The doctor gave me antibiotics

The doctor ordered tests to rule out/check for TB, sarcoid, cat scratch and ordered a CT an MRI a toxoplasmosis, referral to hematologist.

Are any of these particularly dangerous? Dr. Google is not doing well to explain this to me. Can you guide me?

Are all these tests strictly necessary? and/or should I/could I be doing them in a certain order so if the cause is found earlier I can stop doing needless testing?

Brief Answer:
Hii. Can u tell me the duration of the swelling? Are you having any pain ov

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Can u tell me the duration of the swelling? Are you having any pain over the oarotid gland? There are XXXXXXX causes for a parotid swelling. The inflammatory benign swelling of this gland is of short duration: those swelling has get formed within a short period of time. The causes of benign swellings are parotid abscess, granulomatous disease, viral parotitis, parotid gland inflammation due to stone in the opening of the gland and many others. If it is a tumour of the parotid gland then the cause should be pleomorphic adenoma, warthins tumor and many others. So you need yo consult an head and neck ent surgeon. You can repeat the ultrasound again. FNAC need to be done by a pathologist of a tertiary hospital. If the report was pleomorphic adenoma ( as it is most common tumour) then the parotid gland should be removed as early as possible and the outcome of the surgery is very good in majority of cases. But if the tumour is of short duration, firm on touch, and the report has come to granulomatous disease then you can start the antibiotic and see whether it is resolving or not. If it resolved or get decreased in size then it is benign lesion and you don't need to worry about. He has referred to haematologist as some lymphoma can also cause parotid swelling. So only a hamatologist can rule it out. He has advised CT and MRI as some deep tumour can cause parotid swelling. So your doctor approach is very good and you should follow it. If you want you can repeat the FNAC but you follow your doctor advice. Please review if you have any queries and also with the reports. Get well soon.
