I started having a cold over 4 months ago with sneezing and then it turned into a cough with a blocked ear and ringing from it. The blocked ear cleared up after about 3 weeks but I still get ringing and a sense of fullness from it which I have now had for more than 4 months. I particularly notice a high pitched squeeky sound from the ear when I move my jaw up and down while eating. I saw the ear, nose and throat doctor a couple of months ago who checked it and confirmed that there was mucus behind the ear drum and the Eustachian tube was still blocked. He prescribed Aturgyl nasal spray, and courtesone tablets for 5 days to clear it. I also attach a hearing test which I had done recently. How long does it normally take in these circumstances for the ringing in ear to disappear? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
ETD and Tinnitus.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for following up.

1. This is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and Tinnitus follwing Allergy and a URTI (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection).

2. From your attached hearing tests, you have nearly normal hearing with a very mild hearing loss on both sides. The tympanogram is 'A' type which means recovery is taking place and is a good sign.

3. Usually it take 2-3 weeks for this to settle down and by then your Tinnitus should decrease. The Eustachian Tube which connects the ear to the nose opens during opening of the jaws, swallowing, yawning and eating. These sounds are expected.

4. I normally add an anti-allergy tablet (such as fexofenadine with montelukast) and steam inhalation. The rest of the treatment is fine.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Is it normal to have this high-pitched squeeky noise and the fullness/pressure in the ear after 4 and a half months though because I feel there has been very little improvement over this time?

Are you also saying that it should take a further 2-3 weeks for it to settle down?

I have now finished the course of prednisone and I am only currently taking mometasone basal spray. What allergy control could I use? Is it normal that it is taking so long to clear up? Many thanks.

I also started this treatment more than 3 weeks ago with very little improvement so far. I notice some fullness/pressure in my left ear when I am motionless in a quiet room and I also notice the high-pitched squeeky noise when I grind my teeth as well as moving my jaw up and down while eating, together with yawning.

I am sorry but I do not understand what an allergy test consists of and how it is done?

I do not think that I will be able to have an impendance audiogram in the next couple of months but do you think that it would be different from the previous one which I had attached.

What other further treatment options are possible?

Many thanks
