Question: I have a serious case of onychomycosis and athlete's foot, and am in need of a prescription oral antifungal. can i get such a prescription from this service? Diagnosis made by dermatologist Dr. Kabar from here a few days ago. The OTC antifungal is helping but not quickly or thoroughly enough as the nail is involved and I am Type I diabetic (good control, A1C 5.2), still don%E2%80%99t want to play with feet. Infection has already had about 4 weeks head start due to being misdiagnosed as lichen planus. No appointments with podiatrist for 4-6 weeks. Any help or ideas appreciated. Picture is after 4 days of OTC Lotrimin AF; responding but slow.

Brief Answer:
We can not provide you prescriptions. Please visit your local doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome back to Ask a Doctor Service.

I apologise for not being able to provide you with a prescription, that is not how this site works as there are legal prohibitions that prevent us from providing prescriptions for controlled medication.

That said, You can get the medicines advised by the dermatologist prescribed by your local doctor or family physician.

Before that, I would like to reassure you about the current treatment, if you are noticing any improvement at all with the OTC medication, that is a very very good sign because fungal infections take a long time to get cured from the skin.

You must continue the same treatment for at the very least 6 weeks for the treatment to show effect, that is how long fungal infections take to get cured.

So my suggestion is, continue the treatment for another 6 weeks and if you still do not see any improvement, then consult you local dermatologist and get a proper and legal prescription for the medicines that you will require.

Meanwhile, keep the finger completely dry at all times.

I hope that answers your query.

Apologies again.

Best regards
