Brief Answer:
Possibly migraine but other ominous causes need to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concern. Headaches are broadly of two categories, viz primary and secondary. Secondary headaches occur when some other pathology like braintumors lead to the headache. Primary headaches are where headache is the principal pathology, as in migraine or tension type headache. In your case a closer evaluation is needed to rule out ominous pathologies. I would therefore insist you to visit a doctor without delay.

As of now taking paracetamol or aacetaminophen 1g should provide relief.

I felt so ill two days ago that I went to A&E and they did a CT scan and said it looked okay. They told me to rest and take painkillers. But I've still got this terrible throbbing in the left side of my head on top. It's very painful and if I rub my head I swear I can feel it throb. It's been three days so I thought it would have cleared. I'm only just sitting here "resting" but can feel it throbbing painfully and the pressure on my head and it's worrying.

I'm worried it could be a stroke coming on or a bleed there or something

Brief Answer:
CT Brain rules out the major ominous pathologies

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the update. Sorry for the inadvertent delay. If there was some ominous cause the CT Brain would have detected it. You need not worry about an impending stroke or bleed if you have your blood pressure in control and periodic monitoring will help in dealing with it.

For the headache, taking naproxen 500 mg one or two tablets together (as per requirement) should help. If you keep getting headaches from time to time, your doctor can prescribe amitryptilline or topiramate to be taken regularly.

I've seen the optician and she says the pressure in my eyes are okay. The GP has said my blood pressure is okay. But it's been nearly a week and I'm still feeling dreadful. The throbbing is so constant and painful it's a nightmare and the lightheadedness is frightening and makes me want to keep my eyes shut. I'm concerned the CT scan may have missed a stroke or bleed or tumour

Brief Answer:
Migraine variant

Detailed Answer:
The CT would not have missed a tumor or bleed. If apprehensive, you can get an MRI of brain done to be sure. However, you possibly have a migraine variant where no investigation is likely to reveal anything. You can ask your doctor to prescribe amitryptilline or topiramate to be taken regularly and I hope that would help.

Thanks. I know I sound stupid but I'm worried. It's been nearly a week now and I still feel rotten. The throbbing in my head is so painful and the lightheadedness is frightening to the point I can't open my eyes. I can't understand why it's not clearing after nearly a week. It's frightening. I've had headaches before but nothing like this. And I wouldn't even call it an headache just a constant throbbing and never one that's lasted a week

Brief Answer:
Visit the ER. Get the medicines prescribed. Monitor response.

Detailed Answer:
Sorry again for the inadvertent delay in responding. You need medications and those are prescription medications and hence need to be written by your treating physician before you can get them. Sumatriptan and similar agents can help you get over the acute pain. Thereafter topiramate can be given to prevent further episodes from arising. An MRI of the brain can be done to rule out any cause that might have been missed by the CT scan.

I understand your situation. I have already told you what needs to be done but that is still to be enacted upon. You need to go back to the ER and get the medicines prescribed. Feel free to get an MRI of brain done.
