default
Posted on Fri, 18 Oct 2019
Question: I have a white pimple like thing on the back of my throat on both sides. It 1 one each side. It have been going on for months now. I scratch them off when I feel them coming back. I was told I have HPV at my last pap a few weeks ago. And this bump thing only started after getting my tonsils out. Any ideas? I’m really scared that it’s throat cancer.

Brief Answer:
This is unlikely to be cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The most common condition that causes such white spots is granular pharyngitis.

2. This is a part of Waldeyer's ring of lymphoid (tonsil-like) tissue which guards the oral cavity and nasal airway. This lymphoid tissue reacts to local inflammation, infection or allergy. This tissue tries to compensate the function of the tonsils after the tonsils are removed.

3. It is not cancer. Only HPV subtypes 16 and 18 are considered significant.

4. The appearance of the throat varies from person to person. Whatever is non-symptomatic for a person is normal. Throat images are, therefore, one of the most common images shared online.

5. If you can share clear close-up images of these white spots in your throat, it will be helpful in making a diagnosis.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
