Possible causes and further steps explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query.

There are many causes of the pain in the area you explain. These may vary from simple muscular strain to problems with the blood vessels (deep vein thrombosis) and hernia or osteoarthritis of the hip joint.

It is important for us to know more about the pain such as:

- for how long have you had it?
- is it worse when you move the leg and better at rest?
- anything else that makes it better or worse?
- does Advil help?
- have you had any trauma (have you fallen) recently?
- do you have any swelling in the leg or any skin color changes?
- do you have any numbness or weakness in the leg?
- do you have any lump in the crotch area?

If you have any swelling or color changes in the leg you will need to see a doctor soon to have a doppler ultrasound and rule out deep vein thrombosis (this is a medical emergency due to clots being formed in the veins).

If you do not have any swelling or color changes and you have not had any recent trauma you may take Advil at a good antiinflammatory dose (400mg every 8 hours after food) and Omeprazole 40 mg 30 minutes before breakfast (to protect your stomach). If you get stomach pains, please stop the Advil immediately and see your doctor soon.

Avoiding activities that make the pain worse is important. In some cases, physiotherapy may be beneficial to help strengthen and relax the muscles and relieve the pain.

If you had any recent trauma, or if you have swelling or color changes, or if you are not better with the treatments above (despite having Advil, rest and physiotherapy), you will need to see your doctor. In this case, ultrasound examination may be needed, an X-ray of your hip and knee joint (sometimes knee joint problems may cause pain in the thigh) and in rare cases an MRI may be required.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
