I Have Been Bothered With Feet And Ankles Swelling Up.

Question: I have been bothered with feet and ankles swelling up. Not pain to speak of, just very swelled. I have tried compression socks, and now I am trying to wrap them with ace bandages to see if the swelling goes down. They start out very swelled in the morning, and continue through out the day. The only medication I am on is a generic allergy "claritan" It doesn't seem to help to rest with my feet raised.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
Leg swelling can be from several conditions. The heart is a very common cause. Liver and kidneys may cause swelling of feet as well, and the thyroid gland.
You will need to have some tests and examinations done. A thorough physical exam followed by a heart ultrasound and blood tests such as:
- TSH and FT4 for the thyroid
- creatinine and electrolytes for the kidney function
- albumin level for the liver function
The drug you are using does not seem to cause swelling of the legs.
Varicose veins and venous insufficiency may cause leg swelling as well but generally cause pain in the legs also and you would know you have varicose veins so it is unlikely to be the cause in your case.
Treatment will depend on the cause of the swelling and further steps will be guided by the results of the tests and examinations mentioned above.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
