I Have Been Diagnosed With Cervical Cancer , 1 B2

Question: I have been diagnosed with cervical cancer, 1 B2 I believe. The tumor is at least 6cm and a little smaller than an egg. My treatment plan is radiation, chemotherapy and brachytherapy. I was surprised because I was expecting a hysterectomy. I asked the Dr and he said because of size radiation was the only option. I didn't question further because I was kind of in shock. I trust his decision (he is a very renowned Dr at a cancer center) but my Mom and sister keep asking why not a hysterectomy-I think everyone including me just wants to cut this thing and organs out and be done with it. I have an appointment soon and I can ask for further questions but I'm just looking for an answer now. So why radiation, chemo and brachytherapy instead of surgery?
p.s. pelvic CT scan showed containment to cervix. I will be getting a PET scan.

Brief Answer:
Yes radiation is better

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

In stage IB2, ie tumor >4 cm, radiation is better. This is because surgery often leads to margin positive or other high risk features are found on the specimen. That necessitates post op radiation with chemo too maybe. Hence the patient has to undergo two modalities instead of one. Outcome is also not better than chemo radiation upfront.

Hence, I feel you are on the right track.

Hope this helps.
Regards
