Question: I have been diagnosed with hypertension. And I have been having headaches. I didn’t not have head aches ever until diagnosed with hypertension. Could my headaches be due to hypertension?

P.S. Also could you type up “more likely than not the headaches are a result of hypertension”

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I understand your concern and would explain that arterial hypertension is a common cause of headache.

I would like to know more about your headache characteristics:

- Where is the headache located?
- How long does it last?
- Is it throbbing or pressure type?
- Have you measured your blood pressure values during episodes of headache?
- Is the headache associated to other symptoms like: blurring vision ,dizziness , shortness of breath, nausea?

You should know that the headaches associated to high blood pressure are usually located in the back of the head, they are felt like extreme pressure or sometimes like throbbing sensation and associated to other above mentioned symptoms.

The relief of headaches after starting treatment for high blood pressure, is another sign that headaches are caused by arterial hypertension.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions whenever you need !

The pain is always in the back of my head. It’s a throbbing pain, and when I measure my blood pressure during these episodes it is always high. Recently it was 104/100. The head aches did not start until I was diagnosed with hypertension.

Brief Answer:
High blood pressure seems to be the main cause of headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Thank you for the additional information!

It seems that your headache is related to uncontrolled high blood pressure.

You have a high diastolic blood pressure (100mm Hg) and this means arterial hypertension, which is the main cause of your headache.

So, there is no need for any additional tests. I would just recommend starting anti-hypertensive therapy in order to help maintain your blood pressure under control.

In this regard, I would recommend starting amlodipine or lercanidipine, which are known to lower diastolic blood pressure.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask me again!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
