Question: I have been diagnosed with the symptoms of Barretts Esophagus. Am taking Omeprazol for approx. 6 mos.. Over the last week I have been getting stomach pains before I wake up and even after I take my capsule I still have some queasiness all day no matter what I eat. I've read the diet recommendations but I still can't get away from my 2 cups of coffee in the morning and my 8-16 ozs of Chablis at night.

I can understand your concern...

Well, first of all, the irritants need to be cut down as a priority (I'm specifying the Chablis here). Perhaps substitute it with some fresh yogurts, hot menta tea (at least for the time being).

The second thing to note, you can have coffee, but don't take it in empty stomach as it can further worsen the symptoms. Have a bowl of muesli/ some high fiber oatmeal then have one cup (don't take it extremely hot, just let it cool down a bit and take lukewarm).

Now, although you've read regarding the diet recommendations, let me emphasize a few important points:

-Drink plenty of water, have plenty of fresh green vegetables, simple homemade foods, salads, curd based diet, avoid any form of spicy food...

-Eat in small portions but at regular intervals (have 4-5 small meals a day rather than having 2-3 large meals)...never skip breakfast and always have some healthy foods in breakfast (eg. some baked slices of brown/multigrain bread, boiled eggs, oats, yogurt, muesli etc.)

-Try to maintain a healthy sleeping habit (6-8hours of sound-sleep should be practiced)

- Try to meditate for 15-20min daily and physical exercises for about 30min (even jogging at the nearby park, indoor free-hand exercises will be helpful in the beginning)

-Try to have your dinner at least 2-2.5 hours before the bedtime

Additionally, since it's been almost 6months already on Omeprazole, it can be replaced with a more potent and longer acting PPI like Rabeprazole/Esomeprazole. Please discuss this with your Gastro.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
