Question: I have been experiencing a lump under my xyphoid for 3 months. When the lump is manipulated I get sever pain in ribs, chest and neck area. It was suggested the inflammation is agitating the Vagus nerve. I was referred to a thoracic surgeon who wants to remove the xyphoid. I cant find too much data about this surgery and what happens afterward. What about the space where the xyphoid used to be? Any complications to the rib cage or other organs?

thank you in advance

Brief Answer:
Xiphoid can be removed safely with out any complications

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Removal of Xiphoid is suggested for any pain in it.It could be due to inflammation. It can be caused by lifting weights, exercises, trauma etc.
As per Medical literature, except for some pain in that area after surgery,no complications were described. As Xiphoid is small, even after its removal, there will be no abnormality in the chestwall.
There will be no complications for rib cage or chestwall.
As Thoracic Surgeon suggested surgery, it's better you proceed with it.
Taking Ibuprofen prolonged periods can have complications.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions,I will clarify further.
Wish you good health and speedy recovery
Regards

Are there any concerns having this surgery while being treated for pericarditis? I have had pericarditis since XXXXXXX 18, 2020 and I am now on .6mg Colchicine 2 x daily. It has been a comedy of errors in treating the pericarditis but finally it appears there is a good plan in place. My concern is laying on my back for the surgery. I have not slept lying flat since the Peri because when I do I get abnormal rhythms.
