Question: I have been having lower back pain on the left side only. Hurts mostly at night when sitting and when I am trying to sleep. Very stiff in the morning but once I start moving around its fine. What would be causing this ? This has been going on now for three - four weeks.

Brief Answer:
Can be a back muscle spasm or strain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

Lower back pain is quite a common finding. Back muscle strain is one of the most common causes of acute to severe lower back pain. Lifting a heavy object, twisting, or a sudden movement can cause muscles or ligaments to stretch or develop microscopic tears.

The pain and stiffness in the morning could be due to a beat-up mattress that does not give adequate support to your back. You need to use a firm mattress preferably a cotton mattress which gives your back good support.

For pain and spasm to go you have to do back exercises to relieve the spasm associated with this. Doing hot fomentation and applying muscle relaxant gel will also be helpful in relieving the spasm. Correct your posture while sitting. Take frequent breaks during your work.
Lie on a hard bed. Avoid forward bending and lifting heavyweight.

You can take anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen to relieve pain.
In case the pain is persistent then you may need an MRI scan to rule out any herniated discs.

I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

Wishing you good health.
