Question: I have been taking Flagyl for 8 days for a diverticulitis problem..The treatment has now been over for almost a week, but it seems I have now developed a Thrush problem. The inside of my mouth is hurting and has sores on the upper part of my mouth, the left inside cheek and it is difficult to swallow

Hello,

the first thing you should do is to visit your doctor for assessment. If it's thrush indeed then treatment with antifungal drugs (nystatin for mild disease or fluconazole tablets for moderate or severe disease) would be required. Thrush presents with creamy white patches usually. Metronidazole may cause stomatitis. Avoid any antibiotic for now and visit your doctor for confirmation and appropriate treatment. If you've developed throat symptoms as well (like feeling the food getting stuck behind your chest or inside your throat) then the fungus may have spread to the esophagus. In such cases the treatment might be more difficult.
