I Have Been Told By One Doctor That I Have

Question: I have been told by one doctor that I have cataplexy, but yet a different doctor says that I don't. Over the weekend I had to use the bathroom when I started to get symptoms. I got paralysis and when I stood up, my head fell forward and I smacked my head on the toilet seat. Then Sunday night I collapsed on the floor of the bathroom. I'm afraid now that I will collapse on the floor again. Is this cataplexy, or if not, what is this that I have. I'm afraid to go anywhere. Can you help me?

Brief Answer:
Probably cataplexy, epilepsy should be excluded through examinations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms can be related to many medical conditions. More details are needed to help me through the diagnosis.

Are you conscious during these episodes of paralysis?
Do you suffer from any other medical conditions such as epilepsy?
Are these symptoms sporadic or continuous?

Cataplexy is characterized by sudden physical collapse, though the patient remains conscious. I recommend doing an electroencephalogram (EEG) to exclude this diagnosis.

I will be waiting for your response to be able to help you better.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
