I Have Fluid In My Ears Constant Mucas Discharge From
Chronic sinusitis may be the cause- further details on diagnosis and treatment explained below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
Constant mucus from the nose and blocked ears (fluid in the ears), can happen with chronic sinusitis. Most of the time chronic sinusitis is related to allergies such as hay fever.
I noticed you mention that medications do not help. It would be helpful for us to know which medications you have tried already.
Normally, nasal lavage with saline solutions is used to clear up the nose and sinuses. Also, steroid spray such as Beconase or Fluconase daily may help reduce inflammation and secretions. Oral Loratadine 10 mg at night may be helpful to reduce the allergic reaction. Avoiding irritants or environments that worsen your symptoms is important.
If all the above do not provide a good enough relief of the symptoms then structural causes should be considered. In this case, an x-ray should be performed to visualize the bones and rule out a septum deviation as this may cause problems with the drainage of the sinuses.
Nasal endoscopy or in some cases a CT scan may be performed to rule out polyps or tumors that may be causing blockage locally and prevent the normal aeration of the nose, ears and the sinuses.
To conclude:
- a common cause of your symptoms is allergic sinusitis
- proper treatment as indicated above is needed
- if no improvement with this treatment in 4-6 weeks, then structural abnormalities should be suspected and further tests and examinations (x-ray, nasal endoscopy and head CT scan examination) may be needed to rule out such conditions.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
