I Have Had 3 UTI"s Ina A 11 Month Time

Question: I have had 3 UTI"s ina a 11 month time frame. The first 2 were 3 weeks apart, I was also quite sick with a flu, and both were cultures to show E. Coli.
Lat month I had the 3rd UTI, and this time the culture came back with Proteus Miribilus. (spelling?)
I'm 61, sexually active, have done extensive research on the Proteus M., and will go in for another urine test and culture this week to guarantee to myself this has been cured. I'm not completely convinced it has been. No sexual activity for 7 weeks to build up my immune system from the antibiotics, and feel comfortable with myself again. This has really freaked me out. First time I had a UTI was at 59 yrs old, and now I'm considering complete abstinence. Can the proteus remain an infection in my body and not be cured? The Dr. mentioned a physical abnormality may contribute, along with kidney or bladder stones, and seeing a urologist if I have more than 3 UTI's in A 12 month time frame.

Brief Answer:
Consider anatomical cause or low estrogen
Detailed Answer:
Hi Evistellar,
I agree that when you experience this number of UTIs in a year, it makes good sense to investigate if there is an underlying cause, e.g. kidney stones. One start could be an ultrasound or non-contrast computed tomography scan. It would also make sense, considering your age, that you have a gynecological examination as low estrogen can manifest as atrophic vaginal mucosa and make you susceptible to infections.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.
