I Have Had Acute Bronchitis For About A Week And

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2020
Question: I have had Acute Bronchitis for about a week and a half (since March 11). I think it started with a cold. Had a fever of 100 for about a day - none since. I seem to be managing ok with it, but periodic hacking cough and general malaise (run down feeling) continue. Does this put me in a higher risk category (of serious illness or even death) if I contract COVID-19 while dealing the Acute Bronchitis? I am male, 49, with no pre-existing medical conditions.

Brief Answer:
No this is not a serious situation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor

I can understand your concern

According to the history you provide I don't think this might be a COVID 19 infection. It is normal that in an acute bronchitis to have a hacking cough and a malaise. Usually it lasts for up to two weeks. I don't think so, this is not a serious condition and it will not be especially that you don't have comorbidities. No worries try to be careful for this situation for even some other days. You can take paracetamol instead or even cough suppressant (Codeine tb once orally before sleep) if it disturbs you at night also , safely.

Hope to have been helpful

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. Let me ask the question another way... if I contract COVID-19 while dealing with bronchitis, will my body have a harder time fighting COVID-19 because I have bronchitis at the same time? Thank you for indulging me. Respectfully, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No I don't think you would be worse if it happens

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

The studies until now explain clearly that specifically the olders who have comorbidities are more in risk from COVID and from other viruses as well

According to your age and the most important thing that you don't have any other health problem I don't think you will get worse if you encounter Corona virus around these days
You just try to follow the rules regarding the COVID as all of us should do around the world.
