Question: I have had a persistent cough for the last 9 months. I take allergy pills- over the counter- once a day. I am now on an asthma inhaler, sometimes my cough is dry and non productive, when I use the inhaler it seems to help cough up clear while sticky phloem.
This last week my feet and ankles have been swelled for most of the day.

Brief Answer:
Probably cough caused by post nasal drip, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Dry cough is often related to allergy in my daily practice.

Other possible causes can be gastric reflux or postnasal drip.

I see that you have already used medication for GERD without any effectiveness.

I recommend using an antihistamine such as Cetirizine 10 mg daily in the evening.

I also suggest using saline nasal spray to moisten your nasal passages.

I suggest to drink liquids, gargle with salty water and use a humidifier at home.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you for the report, I will try your suggestions.
I am wondering if the swelling in my feet and ankles is related to the coughing and the need to sleep sitting up or if the swelling is a different condition. It is in both feet equally.
I am not able to move and walk as much as I used to- I sit a lot, mostly because walking and standing is painful and tiresome. While I am sitting I try to move my feet and legs and bend my toes to keep circulation going.
I wear compression socks during the day but take them off at night. I wake up and my feet and ankles are so swelled.
I don't wear heels, I wear tennis shoes when I go out, but it has been the last 2-3 days that the swelling has not gone down.
Do you have any suggestions on revealing the swelling, and what I need to do to make sure this isn't something serious.

Brief Answer:
Feet swelling causes are explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Feet swelling can also be related to many medical conditions.

It is usually related to heart or kidney disease.

It can also be related to high consumption of salt.

So, I recommend to check the heart function through an electrocardiogram.

I suggest regular measurement of the blood pressure.

I also suggest checking your kidney function.

I suggest to do a creatinine and azotemia blood level.

I also recommend to lower the salt in the diet.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Kind regards!
