default
Posted on Thu, 28 May 2020
Question: I have had a weird on and off chest pain on the left side since 2 am. Heart rate has been normal and breathing has been fine. But every few minutes I get a sharp pain in my upper left side of my chest. It is more of a shooting pain and last a second or two then goes away.

Brief Answer:
This appears to be from a small peripheral nerve and may be harmless.

Detailed Answer:

Hello Dschiff,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

The shooting pain that you have described appears to be due to some small peripheral nerve getting irritated. Since there are no other symptoms you have described, I presume that you have none. These very small peripheral nerves may sometimes get irritated for no particular reason and may give rise to sudden, sharp shooting pain. It is mostly harmless and may even go away by itself. I hope you haven't been doing some very strenuous physical exercises lately.

If the pain is still persisting you may take a painkiller and apply some local pain relieving gel/spray. Do not do any vigorous physical exercise for a while.

Hope I have been able to answer your query. If you have any more, do post them on HCM and I will be happy to answer tem.

Take care.
