I Have Had Chemical Depression For 40 Years And The

Question: I have had chemical depression for 40 years and the doctor says that I'm on the right meds now. I still don't feel good especially when I get up and walk. I feel slightly dizzy and light headed. I can't think too fast when I'm up. Is my nerve transmission not fast enough? Do I need to see a neurologist or get on another antidepressant? This is debilitating.

Hello thanks for using ask a doctor service
What kind of medicines you are taking and at what dose?
Depressive disorders usually occur due to altered monoaminergic neurotransmission and mainly serotonin, nor-epinephrine, dopamine etc are involved. Psychological and environmental factors too contribute in depression. But for depression there is no need to consult a neurologist. If the symptoms are persisting then talk with your doctor and ask for dose adjustments.
Thanks and Take care
Please let me know if you have more doubts.
No need to see a neurologist for depression.

The only significant meds I am on are vraylar and lamictal for mood. I am on no antidepressants at the moment. Could that be the problem? Is it a depression problem to have slight dizziness and light headedness when I'm walking? I never got notified by email of your answer.

I don't understand why it takes over 8 hours to get an answer to my question! And why am I not getting notified by email when I get an answer?

Brief Answer:
This could be neurological too.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again
I am sorry for replying late because of busy schedule. Vraylar and Lamictal both are mood stabilisers and can help to stabilise mood but will not help much in persisting depression symptoms.
Yes if you are not on any antidepressant then that could be the reason for persisting symptoms. Slight dizziness, lightheadedness might be due to depression but these symptoms can occur due to some neurological issue too.
Lightheadedness or dizziness can occur due to vitamin B12 deficiency, this can be because of hypotension or some neurological cause too. This should be evaluated if the symptoms are persistent.
Thanks.
Please don't hesitate to ask again for more clarifications.

Since there is light headedness and dizziness should I keep my appointment with the neurologist? I had genetic testing done. Shouldn't I get put on an antidepressant to alleviate my symptoms?

Brief Answer:
If the symptoms are mild then no need to get worried.
Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking
If the dizziness is mild and you have no impairment in day to day functioning then no need to get worried. But if you have difficulty in walking or maintaining balance then at least one opinion of neurologist should be taken. You should get your blood pressure checked in sitting and immediate standing position and if there is postural hypotension then this should be treated.
Vitamin B12 levels should be checked as low levels are cause of dizziness.
Thanks,
Still have doubts please don't hesitate to ask again.

I have taken at least one or more various antidepressants all of my life....for over 40 years. Now I am on none. Don't you think I should be on one to help alleviate some of my symptoms? to help my nerve transmission??

Do antidepressants help to speed up the nerve transmission in the brain by balancing the chemicals? Mine must be somewhat out of balance because I can feel a difference.

Brief Answer:
Yes they help to regulate balance.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again
Yes most of antidepressants work by regulating monoaminergic neuro transmission. Other neurotransmitters like glutamate, GABA too are involved.
Long term use result in changes at molecular and receptor levels. This is the reason the drugs should be taken regularly and in proper doses in order to get best effects.
