Question: I have had very irregular periods over the last 12 months since having my baby 17 months ago. I went on the pill to help but they are still irregular. I have seen 2 doctors and one said it’s fine another said the pill is perhaps not the right one for me and I should change to alter hormone levels. Pap smear all normal. Looking for 3rd opinion

Hi,

Welcome to Ask a Doctor. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Did you have normal delivery? Was there excessive bleeding during delivery?

Can you please elaborate on your menstrual cycles. How frequent are your cycles ( count from first day of one cycle to first day of next cycle)?
Have you recently put on excessive weight? If you are having your cycles once in 35 days, it is normal. Did you have regular menstrual cycles before pregnancy?
Please reply, so that I can advise you regarding further course of management.
Best wishes.

I have been on the pill levlen for a few years.

About 10 years ago I skipped 2 periods and so was prescribed a new pill the levlen and have had no issues since.

I had a c section no complications. Since the birth and being on levlen it has been one month on then off, then 2 months and now 3 months without a period. I am carrying weight but have a personal trainer 2 times a week.

Because changing my pill once before worked-I had a doctor tell me to try changing and continue with the exercise

Hi,
Welcome back.

I suggest you to consult your doctor and take pills for withdrawal bleeding.
If your BMI is high, it is one of the reasons for irregular cycles
Are you still breastfeeding the baby. If so it could also be a reason for irregular cycles.
If not get your thyroid and prolactin hormone tested. You also need to get ultrasound scan done to see if you have polycystic ovaries. Do you have any excess hair growth on the body? If yes, it suggests that you have polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Do write to me if you have further concerns.
Best wishes.
