I Have High Blood Pressure And Take Atenolol, Benazepril, Clonidine

Question: I have high blood pressure and take Atenolol, Benazepril, Clonidine and Hydrochlorothiazide daily. I also have central retinal vein occlusion in one eye. I have been receiving monthly left eye injections for 18 months, sometimes Lucentis and sometimes Avistan but my vision has not improved. Are there any medications for controlling high blood pressure that also have been found particularly beneficial in treating central retinal vein occlusion?

Brief Answer:
Vision loss from CRVO can be stabilized

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query and I am a practicing ophthalmologist for 8 yrs. We see cases of CRVO with macula edema quite a few in our clinic.
Basically, the vision loss due to macular edema cannot be reversed in most cases. The vision loss can be stabilized for sure. What we do is to inject Anti VGEF (Lucentis) to stop new capillary formation and thus stop leaking of fluid into the eye. With this injection, the fluid in the macula will not form or would stop pouring thus stabilizing the pressure in the eyeball. This particular therapy should be started as quickly as possible. Only in mild cases, the vision loss can be regained i.e close to 10%.
You can ask your Ophthalmologist if there are new vessels growing even after Lucentis, if yes you can get a photocoagulation preventing vessels leaking into the eye.
However, the most important things to remind you are: 1) Keep blood pressure under control with medications 2) Get regular eye pressure check and ophthalmologist visits 3) Keep blood sugar under control 4) Vision checks for the other eye should also be important.
Just let me know if you have any specific questions regarding this.
