Question: Hi, doctor. I have high bp and have been on 50 mg of Losartan for many years now. Recently, pressure has gone higher so doctor just recently prescribed 5 mg of Norvase to take along with Losartan daily. My question is in regard to a perscrip prescribed to me some time ago to help me when I get over anxious with rapid heart beat but not sure if the two bp meds interact ok with it and taking it same day. It's 10mg of propranolol. I do not take that daily, only on occasion so would like your feedback on the interaction between the 2 bp meds and propranolol at a different time of day perhaps. Thank u so much.

Brief Answer:
it may have a small effect on blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Propranolol is a beta blocker drug that mostly affects the heart rate—it reduces it—but it may also affect the blood pressure, causing a small decline. If your blood pressure is too low, you should avoid using it. If it remains within the normal range, the combination should be well-tolerated. If you decide to use it and start feeling weak, you should check your blood pressure. In most cases, the blood pressure drop is minimal and unlikely to cause significant issues.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi, doctor and thank u for your answer. Just to clarify, if my bp is at an acceptable number in taking the 2 bp meds each day, taking propranolol once in a while in the same day will not cause an adverse reaction? Again, thank u.

Brief Answer:
no problem

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

the answer above applies to your question. If your blood pressure when taking losartan and amlodipine is not too low (less than 100mmHg) then propranolol is unlikely to harm you. There aren't any serious interactions between these medications besides their blood pressure effect. So - to sum it up - propranolol should not be taken when the blood pressure or the heart rate is low.

I hope it's clear now!
