Question: I have moderate lower back pain. No fever. Was hospitalized twice for diverticulitis, once in August, 4 days, no surgery needed, but large abcess, lower left. Had 3 CT scans during stay. Once for a few hours in October. Took flagyl and Cipro, full course during and after stays. Doing well but have had this back pain, both sides, since last night. No constipation, small, soft movements. Bowels not entirely healed. Have followed diet. Wonder if I should call dr? Am set for a colonoscopy in three weeks.

Brief Answer:
Nothing sounds concerning at this time.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. From what you've said so far, it sounds like the only thing is lower back pain, but no other symptoms at this time. With your history of diverticulitis, it is of course good to consider this, but usually diverticulitis does not present with back pain, so unless your previous episodes of diverticulitis had back pain, I wouldn't think it is from that. Especially since you are having somewhat normal bowel movements, no abdominal pain, and no fever, I would consider diverticulitis to be less likely.

There can be a lot of causes of low back pain, but usually it is musculoskeletal. Does activity affect the back pain at all? What do you mean "bowels not entirely healed"? Any nausea or vomiting?

I hope that helps, let me know the answers to the questions above when you get a chance and I can comment more about your back pain. Thank you for your question, I look forward to your response.
