Question: I have started to take mirtazapine at the beginning of January. I now have noticed lots of short thin black hairs growing on both sides of my face. Could this be a side effect? I am 73yrs of age.

Brief Answer:
Mirtazapine usually causes hair loss.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I don't think that mirtazapine can cause increase facial hair growth.
Antidepressants including mirtazapine usually are known to cause loss of facial hair or thinning of the hair not hair growth on face.
There can be other reason for it.

Hope I have answered the question.

Thank you, What would you recommend as my next step. I have a physical scheduled for Feb. 17. I am feeling very anxious about the thin black hairs that are sparsely spread out on my face. Do you think I should just wait until
Feb. 17. Do you think I should take immediate action or just wait 4 days? I have had panic attacks over the years and that's why I have been on meds. I am not someone who frequently bothers my PCP or a dermatologist I do get worked up but very, very seldom. I would like your advice on how to proceed.
Thank you. XXXXXXX Bodner

Brief Answer:
You can wait till 17 February without any problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.

I think you can wait for 4 more days and there is nothing wrong if you wait.

You can go to the doctor and s/he probably will test androgen and cortisol levels.

If nothing is wrong with your adrenal gland you can just use tweezers to remove them.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
