I Have Symptoms Of A High-pitched Sound When I Move

default
Posted on Sat, 30 May 2020
Question: I have symptoms of a high-pitched sound when I move my jaw up and down while eating, yawning and even when I turn my head sideways to the affected side as well as grinding the teeth. I also have fullness/pressure in the ear when the jaw is motionless. I went to see the doctor a couple of days ago who thought it was due to the jaw joint although there is no pain or soreness and recommended that I see a stomatologist but she didn't think it was because the Eustachian tube is blocked. Does this make sense?

I also had an x-ray performed on the jaw a few months ago and it said that the left mandibular condyle is positioned very slightly in front of the most pronounced point of the temporal condyle.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to jaw

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

First of all thank you for approaching us with your query. I read through your query and I must say that it can be due to jaw. I suggest you to give rest to that side of the jaw(like reduce excessive opening, supporting the chin while yawning, avoid having hard substances for a 2weeks atleast). I wanted to know whether you have any missing upper or lower back tooth or teeth in that side of your oral cavity. Also if you have the xray which you mentioned please send a pic of that xray of the joints. It would be helpful in reaching a proper diagnosis. Besides these reduce stress because stress makes your jaw muscles contract without your knowledge in the form of clenching teeth or biting etc. It also cause damage to the jaw joint and cartilage muscles etc. So stay calm. Hope you understood what I meant.

Thank you and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit S Menon

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I do not have any missing upper or lower back teeth on that side of my oral cavity.

I attach copies of the x-rays firstly with the mouth open, secondly with the mouth closed and thirdly with the mouth closed again.

I have had these symptoms for about 6 months as I initially thought the high-pitched sound and fullness/pressure from the left ear was due to Eustachian Tube Dysfunction which my doctor has now ruled out.

I am seeing the stomatologist (oral dentist) next week which was prescribed by my doctor. Is there any treatment he can give me to relieve me of these sounds in my ear?

Brief Answer:
It can be problem of jaw

Detailed Answer:
Hii thanks for your followup query. I read through your query. I must say that since eustachian tube block has been ruled it can be of the temperomandibular joint dysfunction of that side. It can be due to many causes like excessive opening or sudden hard bite. It may not cause problem all of a sudden but within few days or months. Best treatment can be giving rest to that joint. Like i said before in my previous reply. Give rest for that joint for weeks and do warm packs on the joint from outside infront of the ear. Since no pain is there medications are not required. Regarding xrays please mail it to YYYY@YYYY (as i havint received in this) so that I can tell you more clearly about diagnosis and treatment. Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit

I have just attached copies of the x-ray to ' YYYY@YYYY ' and would appreciate your comments.

Is it normal to still suffer the symptoms of a high-pitched sound when moving the jaw up and down while eating and yawning, together with fullness/pressure in the ear while the jaw is not moving after about 6 months?

Brief Answer:
Xrays are not clear

Detailed Answer:
Hii Thank you for your followup query. From the xrays its not clear(the way of taking pic of xray is not correct). Anyways it can be due to the joint dysfunction the symptoms said by you can happen. So I suggest you to :
reduce having hard food, support the chin while excessive opening like having big bite of a burger or yawning, give rest to that side, dont sleep from that side. Apply muscle relaxant cream on that area and do warm pack infront of the ear.Reduce any stressful work . Stresscan be a major factor in these condition(unknowingly it causes problem).Practice meditation or yoga so that it reduces stress.Follow these for 2 weeks. Mostly it will be fine. If not meet stomatologist and get it treated. Hope you understood what I meant. Please review my answering so that I can improve answering in future. Thankyou and have a healthy day. DrRohit S Menon

The x-ray report said that the left mandibular condyle is positioned very slightly in front of the most pronounced point of the temporal condyle but I do not understand exactly what it means.

My doctor also thought that I may need to wear a mouth guard at night to correct the displacement of the jaw and also recommended physiotherapy at the same time.

Brief Answer:
Rest the jaw joint

Detailed Answer:
Hiii thank you for your followup. The xray which you had send me was not clear at the condylar region so i couldnt reach a reach a conclusion. Anyways for the treatment you have to follow what I had mentioned for 2 weeks. If at all there is no change from present condition go for a night guard so as to stabilise the muscles. Physiotherapy is what I have explained. Basically they will rest your muscles around the jaw and reduces more effort on that side and in a way rests that area. So nothing to worry. Stress is important factor(again i am telling that) That causes problem without you knowing only. So reduce it. Follow meditation and yoga. Listen to music or whichever activity reduces your stress. This condition will be fine in few weeks time. This is the treatment modality for this condition. Hope you understood what I meant. Thank you and have a healthy day.
