Brief Answer:
Diets rich in protein may positively affect an overactive bladder

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query. Normally a rich in protein diet may cause an increase in urination in many patients as it increases the work in the kidneys and promotes more urine production.
In the case of an overactive bladder, though, it is found that food high in protein may help reduce this overactivity. This is why some patients experience the opposite with high protein diets, due to overactive bladders which react positively to proteins in the diet.

This in itself is not a condition that needs specific treatment. Food that may help with an overactive bladder are nuts, green beans, bananas, pears, whole grains (including rice and oats), eggs, bread, potatoes, etc.

Training the bladder (by resisting the urge to urinate and also having scheduled trips in the toilet) may be helpful and also, pelvic floor exercises. Your doctor may also do certain tests to make sure if you have an overactive bladder and may prescribe medications for it if the above measures do not help and the urge to urinate is bothersome.

To conclude:
- an overactive bladder may be the cause of the urge to urinate (if you do not have burning or discomfort during urination)
- diets rich in protein help ease the overactive bladder, probably justifying why you feel better when you eat plenty of proteins. Other food that ease the bladder are mentioned above
- bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, weight loss, avoiding coffee, alcohol, citrus products, etc may be helpful
- tests may be done to confirm if you have developed overactive bladder (it may happen in men with prostate problems). And medications may be prescribed in the above measures are not helping and the urge to urinate is bothersome.
- if you have any discomfort with urination (burning or pain) please talk to your doctor and have a urinalysis.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
