I Haven't Had An Appetite In Weeks And Have Lost

Posted on Wed, 28 Nov 2018
Question: I haven't had an appetite in weeks and have lost a lot of weight. I had an endoscopy last week and doctor said I have gastritis and I started fomotadine about four days ago. I'm concerned that there may be other reasons I have no appetite. Can the gastritis really just be the cause of no appetite for weeks?

Brief Answer:
Yes it could be.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes gastritis could be a reason. In gastritis there is severe inflammation of gut walls. These inflammed walls are irritated by intake of food hence causing lose of appetite. As there is no appetite complete digestive process is hampered causing loss of weight.
However a few more tests like liver function test and a ultra sound of abdomen should be done as a part of screening to rule out any other gross abnormality.
External digestive enzymes could be taken for few days to increase appetite.Once intake of food is optimum you would start gaining weight.
As Endoscopy is clear(suggestive of just gastritis) chances of it being related to a cancerous pathology are very rare.
Hope i was helpful.

I had an abdominal ultrasound, which came back normal.
But I've had other strange symptoms like dry mouth and a tingling tongue and I don't know if it's all related. I'm scared that they are connected through some other non gastro related issue, which wouldn't have been shown on ultrasound or endoscopy. I also had a normal CBC recently but am wondering if im not being tested for the right issue.

Brief Answer:
Latest medical science is imaging based not symptom based.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Have you ever had a colonoscopy done? After the age of 45, it is recommended that all people should have a colonoscopy every 5-10 years. Even if you have had this test in the last 5 years it might be recommended to repeat it.
Second test is CT abdomen.
If both of them are normal its nothing major.
Best and easiest way to rule out all your assumptions.
Thanks!
