I Know I Had Meningitis As A Teenager That Was
Consider doing the Valsalva manouever multiple times per day
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using "Ask a doctor".
I read your query and I understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear that you weren't treated for meningitis. It is an acute infection so meningitis itself it is healed by the body. But sometimes, like in your case can leave complications which need treatment.
The problem you have in the ear it is called otitis media with effusion. Medications are not recommended for routine use due to lack of long-term benefit, including antibiotics, corticosteroids (oral or nasal), or antihistamines and decongestants. Using them gives more side effects then helps.
It helps to do the Valsalva manoever- forced exhalation with closed nose and mouth. Doing it multiple times per day will help the fluid drain into the nose.
If it doesn't help and if the fluid has been in the ear for more then 6 months causing you hearing problems then surgery options include tympanostomy tube insertion and adenoidectomy if they are blocking the drain of the fluid into the nose.
Al these options of treatment of course need to be explored with a local ENt specialist which will decide what is best to be used in your case after he examines you.
I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Dr. Klarida Papaqako, General and Family physician.
