Brief Answer:
A positive pregnancy test is quite a sure indicator of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Normally, when a pregnancy test comes out positive, then it is very likely the patient is pregnant.
The first few pregnancy tests may come out negative and this is because of the concentration of BHCG (the hormone that pregnancy tests detect) being still lower than the limit for it to be detected in the urinary pregnancy test. BHGC increases by 60-100% in 2 days, so repeating the test a few days later may show positive.
In your case, it would be very helpful if you let us know of your last menstrual period and how often do you get your periods (once in how many days).

To conclude:
- as a general rule, if you had a few negative pregnancy tests but the last test came out positive, it is very likely you are pregnant.
- more specifically, it would be helpful if you provide us with your last menstrual period and how long is your menstrual cycle (how often do you get your periods).

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Brief Answer:
It is 8.5 weeks since your last menstrual period- this, in the terrain of a positive pregnancy test, indicates pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

It seems it is more than 8 weeks from your last menstrual period. This, together with a positive pregnancy test and the presence of some pregnancy symptoms (cramps and breast tenderness), clearly indicate pregnancy.

I would advise you to see your doctor and have a check. Very likely, the doctor will not be able to feel your womb at this stage or hear the heartbeat with a doppler machine, but an abdominal ultrasound will be able to identify the sac, the embryo within the sac, and the heartbeat.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

What if the test was wrong??

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely for the test to be wrong- other tests can be used for a definite diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

It is very unlikely the test was wrong. The urinary pregnancy tests are quite sensitive tests and once they are positive, it is unlikely to be inaccurate. Only negative results need to be verified a few days later, just in case the hormone was not in high enough levels.
Also, given the fact that your last menstrual period was more than 8 weeks ago while you normally have regular periods, further supports the fact that you are pregnant.

For a more accurate and definitive diagnosis, you need to see your doctor. He can do a blood test to measure the BHCG levels in the blood and if this is positive then pregnancy is confirmed. Another option is for the doctor to do an ultrasound which will determine if there is a pregnancy in your womb.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
