I Plugged A Heavy Duty Electrical Cord Into A Socket.
Question: I plugged a heavy duty electrical cord into a socket. The electrical cord had a rusty end and it gave me a shock in the first two fingers of my left hand, the back of my hand and up my arm. This happened last night. My hand hurts when curling my fingers and the back of my hand is swollen and red. I called a nurse from WellCare and she advised me to go to emergency and have someone else drive. Our regular Emergency has a 5 hour wait and I did not go. Today, it is more swollen. I am planning on calling the doctor tomorrow, and hope to go to an Immediate Care Facility.
Brief Answer:
Probably you should go at the emergency room
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Your symptoms seem to be related to electrical burn on the hand.
I also recommend to go at the emergency room for a physical examination.
Meanwhile, I suggest to use an antibiotic cream for local application in the hand area.
I also recommend to use an anti inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen 400 mg to relieve the pain.
The burn may need up to three weeks to heal completely.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
