Brief Answer:
Do you have any other symptoms?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'.

As this is only a slight elevation, most likely it wouldn't be anything to worry about, but I would want to ask if you have any other symptoms, or what the reason for the blood test was? There could be many causes for a slight elevation like this, including infection, inflammation, medications (such as steroids), and even stress, exercise, or cigarette smoking. If there are no symptoms of infection or inflammation, I wouldn't be concerned about it, and wouldn't say you need to necessarily follow it up, but next time you have your blood checked you could make sure it goes back down to normal, which I would expect it would.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

The test was done as part of my annual check up. I do smoke about half a pack a day and had a episode of acute panic attack with increase BP and tachycardia early January as my dad passed away just before Christmas.

Why is the total WBC high when all values except Neutrophils are high?

Brief Answer:
Smoking can cause mild inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Neutrophils are usually the most numerous white blood cells, and so usually when the total white blood cell count is elevated, it is because of neutrophils. Cigarette smoking can cause inflammation, which would activate your immune system to produce more neutrophils to address the inflammation.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.
