I Recently Had A CT Scan And It Was Noted

Question: I recently had a CT scan and it was noted that there were variable mild groundglass mosaic changes of the dependent bilateral lower lobes. Can you tell me what this means and if it's something that should be followed up on? My doctor didn't seem to think it was an issue but didn't explain what it means. I also have mild atelectactic changes of the bilateral lower lobes for which I was told to do breathing exercises. She said no follow up was necessary but I don't understand why this occurred and I'm not sure if I need to get a second opinion.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry for this. No follow up required.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
Ground glass opacities are commonly seen with inflammation in the lungs.
This will also cause cough, breathlessness, smoking history etc.
Since all these are absent in your case, I don't think any major issue with your CT findings.
And yes, breathing exercise will be fine for your atelectasis and CT findings.
So no need forced follow up CT or second opinion.
Please let me know
1. Do you have coughing or breathing difficulty?
2. Do you smoke?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your answer and reassurance. This makes me feel better.

I do currently have some sort of a chest infection at present but did not have it during the CT scan. It came a few days later and I have a dry cough but it does sound like there is some congestion in my chest although the cough is not producing anything. I don't have any other cold symptoms it seems to be just located in my chest.

And in answer to the other question I am not a smoker.

Thank you.
