Question: I started PEP 11 days ago for a low risk HIV encounter, (2 mins unprotected vaginal sex with prostitute, I’m uncircumcised and she tested negative with Oraquick Rapid HIV test), and have been worried about the side effects . .. within the 11 days I have noticed abdominal and chest weight gain (I took pictures)... is this normal? Is it permanent? Will this permanently effect my metabolism? Should I stop taking the medications (Tivicay and Truvada?)

Brief Answer:
You should not stop taking PEP!

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor'.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Based on your history, you should know that after 11 days of taking PEP, it rarely can cause central adiposity, but if it developed it is not permanent and cannot affect your metabolism for a long time.

But, this doesn't mean that you should stop taking PEP!

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards
