I Started Experiencing A High Pitched Ringing In My Ears

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Oct 2020
Question: I started experiencing a high pitched ringing in my ears last night at about 7 pm and it still hasn't gone away today at noon. I used a home ear wax clearing kit three days ago when I had no ringing. I used the kit because I had a slight pain in my left ear which I figured was from earwax buildup from wearing foam earplugs every night due to where I live being very loud. I've been using wax earplugs on and off in the past years as well. The earwax removal kit got rid of the pain and cleared my ears though so I don't know if that's the problem. I also take 150 mg of spironolactone, but I've been taking that since this January and only ever had very occasional bursts of a ringing in my ear that went away after about ten seconds. I'm wondering if spironolactone is the cause, if I don't stop taking it, will the ringing be permanent. It seems the ringing might be more pronounced in the right ear as well. I'm wondering if this is serious enough to go see a doctor in person or when it is that serious as well.

Brief Answer:
Possibly wax induced tinnituss

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Spironolactone is not known to cause tinnitus or ringing in ears.
Having wax on ears can cause tinnitus and possibly the wax kit you had was not so effective. Having wax removed in doctor's office is more effective.
Also using antidepressants and antianxiety drugs such lorazepam, diazepam , tricyclic antidepressants such amitriptyline can cause ringing in ears.
It can be reversible if used for a short time and can be ireversible if used for longer.

Hope I have answered the question.
